SPORTS MOUTH GUARDS.
Anyone engaged in contact sports should use a well made mouthguard (gumshield) to reduce the risk of injury to teeth, bone and lips and also to minimize the risk of concussion. There is evidence that, in most sports, the cost of treatment following dental and facial injuries is far greater than any other injury. This is because most sports injuries heal without residual disability while injuries to the mouth and face can entail further treatment throughout life.
A custom made mouthguard, designed and constructed by your dentist, will provide a better fit and be more comfortable to wear than the fit-it-yourself types sold in sports shops. A professionally made mouthguard will also be more likely to stay in place on impact and will ensure that the wearer's breathing is not impaired.
For rugby a medium body mouthguard is sufficient but for hockey we recommend a heavy duty one.
