Why Mercury Free?
We hear continuously that
amalgam, containing mercury, has been used as a tooth restorative material for
more than 150 years. This does not mean that its use should continue without
question. It has now been scientifically proven beyond any doubt that mercury,
in its vapour form passes through the skin in the mouth into the body. Our
waste amalgam cannot be lightly disposed of, it is classified as 'toxic waste'.
Why would we want to place a material in a patient's mouth, which is ultimately
classified as 'toxic waste' requiring specially licensed companies to dispose
of for us?
Mercury has a very strong affinity to lipid or fatty tissue
- the greatest organ accumulation of fatty tissue is the brain and nervous
system. This can have a disastrous knock on effect on the endocrine system
responses and breakdown of the body's immune system often presents with varied
symptoms. The presence of other heavy metals, notably lead, cadmium, aluminium
and nickel, worsens immune depression. It is most fortunate that the human body
is as resilient as it is because most people with amalgam fillings do not
exhibit any symptoms that they are aware of. However, in a 1997 publication the
British Dental Association stated, "about 3% of the population are estimated to
suffer from mercury sensitivity" which means that 1 .75 million people in this
country are showing symptoms from mercury toxicity. Given that the BDA are, at
best, sceptical about the effects on mercury on the population one might
surmise that their estimate of 3% is still a lot of people. Draw your own
conclusions and do the maths with a population of approximately 60 million.
